Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 800 lbs 2.00 to 6.00 higher, over 800 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers 4.00 to 8.00 higher. Very good demand for steers and heifers as the cattle futures contracts continue to climb higher. The fall months of the Feeder Cattle contract are highly attractive and backgrounders want to make sure they have cattle to sell during that time, which is really making the market very active for this class of cattle. Cash fed cattle up to 184.00 in Iowa as cattle feeders are fighting hard to get their cattle sold par with the spot month of the Live Cattle futures. Cattle producers have seen little reason to delay selling their home raised feeder cattle as the market has been so attractive, which has resulted in two large months of auction receipts. Calving season is nearing, another reason for cow/calf operators to get their last year's crop of cattle sold to make room in the corrals for calving heifers and cows. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 5.00 higher, bulls steady.
