Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 3.00 to 6.00 higher, few instances to 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers as the Live and Feeder Cattle futures continue to rally. There has been much optimism infused into the feeder market by the futures contracts moving back towards their historic levels before they crashed after Thanksgiving. With Feb Live Cattle at 184.00, feedyards held firm and asked for higher money for their fats, which they greatly need as the fat market has been at a disappointing level for cattle feeders after having to give record high prices for feeder cattle. The weather has warmed up but mud has been an issue as the weather has been foggy and dreary. Cattle feeders need more money and dug their heels in, no reported sales as of this writing. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 lower, except Lean cows and slaughter bulls 5.00 to 6.00 higher.
