Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Steer calves under 500 lbs 3.00 to 8.00 higher, over 500 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, heifer calves steady to 5.00 lower. Yearling feeder steers steady to 4.00 higher, heifers steady to 5.00 higher. Moderate to good demand for calves this week, the large rain system that moved across the region sure enough lessened demand for these calves as many places where these calves would be bound saw 2-4 inches of rain. Very good demand for yearlings, especially as the cattle contracts rallied Wednesday and cash cattle traded higher, up to 187.00 by Friday. Central and Western SD auction markets are in the heart of the fall run as cow/calf producers are beginning their fall marketing. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 lower, bulls steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
