Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 700 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, over 700 lbs steady to 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 650 lbs sold with higher undertones, over 650 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Very good demand remains for all weights of steers and heifers but with the pressure on the futures contracts cattle bound for feedyards were under pressure as well. Turnout time is upon us now and the demand for grass suitable cattle is red hot. Cash fed cattle market was lower, many around the 176.00 mark, and with the coming summer months of the Live Cattle futures at 13.00-16.00 under the current cash market cattle feeders have slowed in their pursuit of feeders. Many corn acres have been planted this past week as the weather was dry and warm, rain is needed across the whole state to get the grass and alfalfa growing good. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower, bulls 5.00 lower.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
