Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers steady to 5.00 lower. Good demand remains for all weights of steers and heifers but cattle feeders and backgrounders slowed in their pursuit in chasing the feeder market higher. Cash fed cattle were lower and now the front month of the Live Cattle futures is June, which is much lower than the cash market. Turnout time is quickly approaching, keeping demand for grass cattle red hot. The supply of light weight cattle to background, whether in a yard or on grass is very tight which is keeping that market supported as well. The Feeder Cattle futures contracts for the late summer/fall months at 235.00 are giving backgrounders much hope and optimism for the coming months. Corn planters were in the ground this week as the temps warmed up with great progress expected to be made as the forecast looks clear until the weekend. Slaughter cows 5.00 to 10.00 lower, bulls 5.00 to 6.00 lower.
