Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher, except 850-950 lbs 1.00 to 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers unevenly steady. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers as cattle feeders are feeling very optimistic about the fat cattle market, as it topped at 162.50 this week. The summer and fall months of the Feeder Cattle contracts are very attractive and backgrounders want to get their cattle needs secured to have some cattle to sell during that time frame, which is creating a very active market for those light fleshed cattle to make yearlings of. The temperature rose above freezing, finally, along with rain and made for muddy ground conditions, cattle were carrying quite a bit of tag at times, taking away their eye appeal as they aren't as attractive when they are dirty. Another large storm in the forecast for the entire state for the coming week. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 3.00 higher, bulls steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
