Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Steer calves under 500 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower, 500-700 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Heifer calves under 500 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 lower, over 500 lbs unevenly steady. Yearling feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher, heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Good demand for this large offering of calves, flesh condition has become a major factor now as many weaned calves are being offered and some are carrying too much flesh condition for their weight. The market is very active though as the bullish psychology amongst cattle feeders grew in the recent weeks as the cash fed cattle pushed closer towards 160.00. Packers were able to buy fat cattle a dollar or so cheaper this week with many at 156.00 yet there is still great hope for the coming months. Very good demand remains for yearlings and that market is very active. A large winter storm is in the forecast for this next week which caused some cattle producers to hurry and get their cattle consigned and sold before it hits. Breaker and Boner slaughter cows were 6.00 to 7.00 lower, Lean cows 2.00 lower. Bulls 3.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
