Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago: Steer calves 3.00 to 5.00 higher, heifer calves 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Yearling steers steady to 3.00 higher, heifers 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Very good demand for calves and yearlings as all auction locations returned to their normal sale schedules after the Thanksgiving break. As the cash fed cattle market moved higher, 157.00-159.00, the feeder cattle market got a boost as well. Feeder cattle producers in East River, SD are now in full swing of marketing their spring born calves and the auctions are hosting very large auctions. Cattle feeders were willing to chase the feeder market a little more as the fat market is moving to levels that the futures market didn't predict would come until spring. Auctions will be large as those who like to sell before the end of the year only have a couple more weeks to do so before the Christmas holiday, which sees most locations shut down for a full two weeks. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower, except Lean cows 3.00 higher. Bulls 2.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
