Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Choice slaughter steers were steady to 1.00 higher. Choice slaughter heifers mostly 1.00-3.00 higher. No implant cattle bringing a premium in both steers and heifers. Dairy steers 3.00 higher today. Several load lots, along with plenty of smaller packages in the offering. Demand was good from the internet and in the stands. Slaughter cows: Lean and Boner cows steady to 1.00 higher. Not enough lean cows or bulls for a trend today. Slaughter lambs: Lambs 70 lbs 15.00-19.00 higher, 80 lbs 2.00-5.00 higher, 90 lbs 2.00-7.00 higher. Lambs 110 lbs 4.00-6.00 higher, 120 lbs 1.00-2.00 higher, 130 lbs 7.00-8.00 higher. Slaughter ewes mostly steady with instances 5.00 higher.
