Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Too light a test last week for a comparison today. Cattle with no implants bringing a premium. Upward trend on dairy steers today. Many load lots, along with plenty of smaller packages in the offering today. Demand was good throughout the sale. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows steady to 1.00 higher. Not enough Boner cows last week for a comparison. Lean cows were mostly 1.00 higher. Slaughter lambs: 60-70 lbs 6.00-9.00 lower, 80 lbs 10.00-15.00 lower, 90 lbs 20.00-21.00 lower today. With lighter numbers this week 100 lb lambs 13.00 to sharply lower. Slaughter ewes were mostly 5.00 lower today.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
