Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Fed steers 3.00 to 5.00 lower, heifers 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Holsteins steady to 4.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering of slaughter cattle was moderate. Buyers were hesitant to start bidding today. Black cattle that would yield higher quality cuts were in biggest demand today. Getting the buyers to start bidding on colored cattle was a struggle. The atmosphere in the seats was pretty quiet and grim today. Sellers looked a little disappointed with the drop in price over the last couple of weeks. We saw several lots of clean, lighter cattle offered today. Some cattle needed a little more time on feed. Most cattle hauled in overnight, making weigh ups good for the buyer. Estimated dressed cost 295.00 - 302.00. CME Live Cattle and Corn both closed a fair amount lower. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Bulls 4.00 to 7.00 higher. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 8.00 to 11.00 higher. Good demand for this eye appealing offering of lambs. Several buyers in the seats, as well as, on the internet. Buck lambs continue to be a hot commodity this week in preparation for the upcoming ethnic holiday. Black faced lambs and ewes are in excellent demand. Another week with a big offering of light weight lambs. 70 lbs - 90 lbs sold with steady undertones this week. Slaughter ewes steady to 5.00 lower.
