Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers 1.00 to 4.00 lower, heifers steady to 1.00 lower. Holsteins steady to 2.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering of cattle was moderate. 4 loads of fed cattle offered with several smaller packages to help buyers fill loads. we are seeing more and more crossbred cattle. Most cattle hauled in overnight, making weighing conditions good for the buyer. Estimated dressed cost 303 - 306. CME Live Cattle and Corn both closed lower. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher. Bulls 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Traditional weight slaughter lambs steady to 6.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering of sheep was good. 70 lb lambs sold a light softer, 80 lb lambs steadyish, 90 lb lambs sold with higher undertones. Slaughter weight lambs continue to be lighter in offering. 70 - 90 lb lambs continue to be the biggest assortment offered at the sale. Buck lambs in high demand today. If they had black faces they were in even bigger demand. Eid al Adha holiday coming up at the end of June makes the demand for male lambs and goats much higher than normal. Slaughter ewes steady to 5.00 higher. Demand for the large offering of ewes was good. Biggest demand is black face.
