Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers 1.00 to 2.00 higher, heifers 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Holstein steers mostly steady. Very good demand for this large offering of steers and heifers. There were many No Implant cattle and there continues to be a good premium for these cattle as this is where the market is the most active. 9 full loads of steers, 2 full loads of heifers, along with numerous part loads of packages. Packers aren't shying away from heavy weight cattle as they are seeking high quality grading cattle. Average dressed cost of conventional cattle about 253.00. Slaughter cows 3.00 to 4.00 lower, bulls not well tested recently to offer a good comparison. Slaughter lambs steady to 3.00 lower. Feeder lambs and slaughter ewes too lightly tested to offer an accurate comparison with this week's much larger offering. Good demand for slaughter lambs yet packers didn't have to chase the market to get lambs bought as the sheer volume of lambs was so great. Very good demand for feeder lambs, good demand for slaughter ewes. A very large offering of goats this week and the market was active.
