Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago: Slaughter steers 2.00 to 4.00 higher, heifers 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Holsteins to few to make a meaningful comparison, lower undertones present. Demand for this eye appealing offering of slaughter cattle was good. Black hided cattle are in high demand. Most cattle were hauled in overnight, making the weigh ups favorable for the buyer. Non implant and drug free cattle showed a nice premium. Over a dozen semi loads offered today. Report released showed that cattle slaughter was 2% higher than last year and the average weight was 1 pound lower. Prices are finally reflecting tighter cattle supply in the country. Consumers are buying more Choice meat in the past week than the previous. Estimated dressed cost 247.00 - 256.00. CME Live Cattle Futures closed higher, while corn dropped slightly. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Bulls steady in a light test. Traditional weight slaughter lambs steady to 5.00 higher. Demand for this eye appealing offering was good. Slaughter ewes steady to 5.00 higher in a light test. In a report from November 1 lamb slaughter was 10% lower than last year.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
