Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers 1.00 to 3.00 lower, heifers 1.00 lower. Holsteins 1.00 to 3.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering was moderate. Two way buyers stepped in when they saw a deal. The largest demand seems to be for black hided cattle creating a wide price gap. Most cattle were hauled in over night, making weigh ups good for the buyer. Estimated dressed cost 217.74 - 222.58. CME Live Cattle closed down, with corn jumping higher. Slaughter cows Breaker and Lean steady to 2.00 higher, Boner 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Traditional slaughter weight lambs under 149 lbs were 1.00 to 3.00 lower, over 150 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Ewes Good 2-3 5.00 to 10.00 higher, 4-5 & Utility 1-2 10.00 to 20.00 higher, Cull to few to make a meaningful comparison. Demand for this very large offering of sheep and goats was good.
