Compared to two weeks ago: Slaughter steers 2.00 to 4.00 higher, except over 1600 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Slaughter heifers 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Holstein steers steady. Demand only moderate this week, another very large offering of hard fed, high quality grading steers and heifers. Market activity was only moderate as packer buyers showed little interest in chasing the market. Weighing conditions ranged from full to average, estimated dressed cost ranged from 170.00-174.00, few to 176.00. CME Live Cattle futures traded sideways again today, packers unwilling to push the market at the auction in spite of the strength of the boxed beef market. 15 full loads of steers, 3 full loads of heifers, balance part loads and small packages. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 4.00 higher compared to Monday, bulls steady to 2.00 higher. Slaughter lambs mostly steady, instances to 2.00 lower on lambs over 150 lbs. Feeder lambs not well tested. Slaughter ewes steady to firm, in a narrow comparison. Demand for slaughter lambs only moderate, good for slaughter ewes, very good demand for the consignments of bred ewes.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
