Compared to last week: Slaughter steers 2.00 to 3.00 lower, except steers 1600 lbs and heavier 3.00 to 5.00 lower, heifers steady to 1.00 lower. Holstein steers 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Demand only moderate for this very large offering of hard fed, eye appealing, high quality grading cattle. 26 full loads of steers, 15 full loads of heifers, along with many small packages. Packers were very reserved in their bidding. Weighing conditions ranged from full to fair, nearly half the consignments were hauled in overnight. Estimated dressed cost ranged from 167.00-173.00. Boxed beef values jumped sharply this week but packers were determined to buy cattle cheaper at the auction as the supply was so large. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 3.00 lower than Monday’s sale, bulls 3.00 to 4.00 lower. Slaughter lambs 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Feeder lambs not well compared. Slaughter ewes sold with mostly steady undertones. A very large offering of slaughter lambs again this week, demand more moderate for the traditional weight slaughter lambs, good demand was seen for those non-traditional weight slaughter lambs. Moderate to good demand for feeder lambs but the demand from packer buyers was greater as most of those light lambs went to slaughter accounts. Good demand for slaughter ewes.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
