Compared to two weeks ago: Feeder steers and heifers 7.00 to 11.00 higher, with instances of 36.00 higher on lighter steers. The market was crazy active today. Demand for light grass calves was good, buyers were very actively bidding on 700 lbs to 900 lb steers and heifers. Several eye catching packages of 1000lb or more steers got bidders attention as well as they have been harder to find. A couple large consignments of heifers and steers offered along with several smaller packages giving buyers the options to fill loads. Most cattle were hauled in overnight, had 3 rounds of shots and grass green flesh condition. Report on Friday stated, placements in feedlots during the month of April totaled 1.75 million 4% below 2022. Cattle on feed reported at 11.6 million on May 1 3% below the same time last year. CME Feeder Cattle closed lower today while, Corn took a big jump. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Bulls steady to 1.00 higher. NO SALE NEXT WEEK DUE TO THE MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY! BE SAFE AND ENJOY THE HOLIDAY!

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
