Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 2.00 higher, except 750 lbs - 850 lbs 1.00 to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering of feeder cattle was moderate. Back to grass special offered a variety of eye appealing steers and heifers with light to moderate flesh. Several lots were hauled in on Saturday, while most hauled in Sunday. Several lots had two hundred head plus in them today. Grass fed cattle with two plus rounds of shots and no implants really caught the attention of bidders today. A large group of 700 steers got bidders on the edge of their seats and everyone in the sale barn paying attention. Heifers seemed to really be in greater demand by bidders today. Nice weather today had the seats a little emptier than normal. Farmers are busy getting crops in the ground. CME Feeder Feeder Cattle Futures as well as the Corn Futures closed higher. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 7.00 higher. Bulls sold with higher undertones.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
