Compared to last week: Feeder steers 3.00 to 7.00 lower with instances of 20.00, except 600 lbs - 650 lbs 4.00 to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 4.00 lower, with instances of 13.00, except 900 lbs - 950 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Lighter steers and heifers under 600lbs held steady to strong, as they are getting harder to find. Demand for this eye appealing offering of feeder cattle was good. Rounds of shots and flesh condition were the biggest factors determining how active the bidding was. Several lots of hay fed fall calves offered today. Cattle on Feed Report for April 1, 2023 said 11.6 million on inventory, 4% below last year at the same time. Placements in March totaled 1.99 million head 1% below 2022. Steers were 6% lower while heifers were 2% lower. Reported fewest cattle on feed since 2017. CME Feeder Cattle and Corn both closed lower. Slaughter cows 8.00 to 11.00 lower. Bulls 3.00 to 5.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
