Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher, with instances of 21.00. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 5.00 higher, with instances of 12.00. Demand for this eye appealing offering of cattle was good, light cattle were a little less active this week vs last. The biggest factor to get bidders attention was rounds of shots. Several lots of cattle were hauled in on Saturday, while most came in on Sunday. Some cattle carried a small amount of tag, which seemed not to be a major decisioning factor for buyers. There is considerable optimism in the cattle market the last few weeks. Simply supply dynamics, as well as, beef demand have analyst thinking these higher prices could stick around for near future. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher in a light test. Bulls steady in alight test.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
