Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 higher with instances of 29.00 on light cattle except, 550 lbs - 600 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 lower, 850 lbs - 950 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 5.00 higher with instances of 20.00 on the light weights except, 800 lbs - 950 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Demand for this eye catching offering of feeder cattle was good. Some cattle were hauled in Friday and Saturday with most arriving on Sunday. A few groups of cattle from the Northern Dakotas and Minnesota showed that winter has been very long. Cattle conditions ranged from grass green to moderate flesh. Rounds of shots, non implant, days weaned and black hide were big determining factors for buyers. CME Markets closing lower definitely did not slow down the bidders today. Slaughter cows 10.00 to 12.00 higher. Bulls 6.00 to 9.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
