Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 higher with instances of 14.00, under 550 lbs instances of 32.00. Feeder heifers steady to 4.00 higher with instance of 20.00 on the lighter heifers, except 650 lbs - 700 lbs & 800 lbs - 850 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Demand for this eye appealing offering of feeder cattle was excellent. Bidders were on the edge of their seats when light weight cattle came in, with them being harder to find these days. The CME Feeder Market was higher today giving hope for the future. Black hided cattle are the highest preferred along with rounds of shots, days weaned and grass fed vs pushed cattle. The weather was the talk of the buyers, as it has been very difficult to keep yards and cattle clean. Slaughter cows steadyish. Bulls 3.00 higher.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
