Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 higher except 550 lbs - 600 lbs steady to 1.00 lower. 4 loads of the same source yearling steers weighing 1000 lbs plus were 2.00 lower this week. Feeder heifers steady to 5.00 lower, except 400 lbs to 500 lbs 1.00 to 4.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering of feeder was was moderate. Rounds of shots, days weaned and black hide effect the demand as well. Flesh conditions were moderate today. Another round of cold weather and possible snow coming mid to end of the week, scared some buyers. Both CME Feeders and Corn were lower today. Slaughter cows in a light test sold with lower undertones. Bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison. No Sale next week due to the Holiday. Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
