Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 lower with instances of 12.00 lower, except 550 lbs - 600 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers 2.00 to 6.00 lower, except 550 lbs - 650 lbs steady to 3.00 higher. Demand for this eye appealing offering of green cattle was moderate. Possibility of mixed precipitation scared a few buyers, the farmers and buyers in the seats were lighter than normal today. Black hided cattle in biggest demand creating wider price gaps today. Vaccinations given, number of rounds, implants and amount of time weaned were also factors that determined the demand. 6 loads of large yearling cattle sold today with very good interest. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 lower. Bulls sold steadyish in a light test.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
