Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago: Feeder steers under 550 lbs sold with lower under tones, 550 lbs and over 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers 550 lbs and under sold with higher undertones, 600 -650 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, 650 lbs to 750 lbs 7.00 to 8.00 higher, not a meaningful comparison in the 8 weights, 900 lbs to 950 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Demand for this large offering was good. Several large lots of cattle today. Fresh conditions were green and most were hauled in overnight. CME Feeder Cattle and Corn closed lower today. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 5.00 lower. Slaughter bulls steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
