Compared to last week: Feeder steers 550 lbs and under 1.00 to 4.00 higher, 550 - 650 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 lower, 650-700 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, 700-750 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, 750-1000 lbs to few to make a meaningful comparison, 1000-1050 4.00 to 6.00 lower. Feeder heifers 350 - 500 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 lower, 500 - 650 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher, 650 - 750 lbs 1.00 to 5.00 lower, 750 lbs and higher to few to make a meaningful comparison. Demand for this eye appealing offering of cattle was good. Clean, black hided cattle were in biggest demand creating price gaps. 7 loads of yearling steers sold today. Several smaller lots of feeder steers and heifers sold before the Christmas holiday. CME Feeder Cattle and Corn both closed lower today. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 1.00 to 2.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
