Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 300-500 lbs sold 3.00-10.00 lower while 500-550 lbs were 8.00 higher. Steer yearlings sold 4.00-7.00 higher. Heifer calves sold 4.00-12.00 higher instances 16.00-23.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 11.00 lower and 650-700 lbs sold 12.00 higher. Trade was good with active demand on similar numbers. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 lower and slaughter bulls were 6.00 higher. Market was good with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
