Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-350 lbs. were sharply higher and 350-450 lbs. sold 3.00-10.00 higher while 450-500 lbs were sharply lower and 500-600 lbs sold 2.00-5.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 were 13.00 higher and 700-750 lbs. sold 3.00 lower. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs. were 8.00 higher while 400-500 lbs sold 4.00-5.00 higher and 500-550 lbs were steady with 550-600 lbs being 19.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs. sold 5.00 lower. Trade was active on larger numbers with very good demand. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-8.00 higher, instances 3.00 lower and slaughter bulls were 12.00 higher to sharply higher, instances 5.00 lower. Market was good to very good with excellent buyer attendance. Special Angus bull sale of 47 bulls and 2 heifers was very well attended and held in conjunction with regular Monday sale.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
