Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 300-350 lbs sold sharply higher and 350-450 lbs were 15.00-18.00 higher while 450--550 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-750 lbs were 10.00-17.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs sold 10.00-19.00 higher and 400-500 lbs were sharply higher while 500-550 lbs sold 3.00 higher and 550-600 lbs sold 17.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 4.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 12.00 lower.Trade was very active with very good demand on larger numbers. Weaned calves on a preconditioning program brought a premium. Slaughter cows sold 6.00-7.00 higher with instances 11.00-17.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 3.00-8.00 higher. Stronger market with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
