Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale: Steer calves 300-350 lbs were 12.00 lower and 350-400 lbs sold 5.00 higher while 400-450 lbs were 15.00 lower. 450-550 lbs sold sharply higher and 550-600 lbs were 18.00 lower. Feeder steers 650-700 lbs sold 3.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-500 lbs were sharply lower with exception of 350-400 lbs being 5.00 lower.Feeder heifers 500-650 lbs sold 5.00 higher.Trade was moderately erratic on smaller numbers with moderate demand. Slaughter cows sold steady to 1.00 higher with instances of 8.00 lower and slaughter bulls were steady to 17.00 higher.Unsteady market with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
