Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last sale in August; Steer calves 350-450 lbs were steady to 3.00 lower while 450-500 lbs sold 7.00 higher and 500-600 lbs were 17.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs were 8.00-17.00 lower and 700-750 lbs sold steady.. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs were steady to 1.00 lower while 400-500 lbs sold 6.00 lower. Feeder heifers had insufficient numbers to compare. Trade was moderate on a good market with smaller numbers. Slaughter cows sold 5-6.50 higher and slaughter bulls were steady to 2.00 lower. Demand was moderate wiyh excellent buyer attendance. Next weeks sale returns to Monday September 11 2023

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
