Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; steer calves under 400 lbs sold 3.00 lower and 400-600 lbs were 10.00-18.00 higher. Feeder steers 650-700 lbs were 9.00 higher. Heifer calves under 450 lbs were 3.00 lower on comparable sales and 450-600 lbs sold 5.00-20.00 higher. Feeder heifers had incomparable numbers with last week. Trade was very active on smaller numbers of quality cattle with a good demand Slaughter cows sold 4.00-5.00 lower while slaughter bulls were steady to 2.00 higher. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
