Compared to the last Friday sale (1-13-23): Feeder steers under 700 lbs sold mostly 10.00-15.00 higher, steers over 700 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Heifer calves all sold 15.00-20.00 higher, with instances of 25.00 higher seen at times. Quality this week was mostly average to very attractive. Several sets of home-raised, rancher weaned calves were seen this sale. Many sets of heifers were very attractive and several ranchers were on hand bidding on heifers to develop into replacements. Ranchers and grass cattle buyers competed over heifer offerings which helped push heifer prices sharply higher. Most sets of calves were weaned 60-100 days or more. Cattle were mostly open haired and very clean. Most cattle were in light flesh as cold winter conditions have helped keep cattle very green. A very large pool of order buyers was on hand for todays sale. Market activity was mostly very active as a result. Weigh up cows and bulls sold on very good demand for very light offerings. Not enough cows or bulls sold to develop any accurate market trend.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
