Compared to last Friday: All yearlings were scarcely tested thus no trend is available. Steer calves under 550 lbs sold mostly sharply lower, however instances of steady were seen on very attractive calves. Steer calves over 550 lbs sold sold steady to weak as packer demand for these offerings was very good. Heifer calves under 600 lbs sold mostly 3.00-8.00 lower. Heifers over 600 lbs were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to weak undertones were noticed. Transportation was the biggest factor limiting demand this sale. Demand for calves was moderate to good and buyers had willing takers for todays heavy offering. However, with no trucking available buyers would not buy calves without wheels to put under them. All calves sold lower as a result. Buyers focused on buying front end calves, especially ones with two rounds of vaccinations and passed or discounted average quality calves or calves with only spring shots. Heavy discounts were seen on plain or average quality cattle. Very large price spreads were seen today. Calf quality today was attractive to very attractive overall. The cattle on feed report showed cattle on feed totaled 11.6 million head on October 1, 2021. The inventory was 1 percent below October 1, 2020. Placements in feedlots during September totaled 2.16 million head, 3 percent below 2020. Marketing's of fed cattle during September totaled 1.79 million head, 3 percent below 2020. Market activity this sale was mostly slow to moderate.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
