Compared to last week Feeder Steers 400 to 450 Steady, 450 to 550 4.00 to 6.00 higher, 550 to 650 Steady, other classes of Feeder Steers not well compared; Feeder Heifers under 500 Steady to 2.00 higher, 500 to 600 4.00 to 6.00 higher, 800 to 850 3.00 higher, other classes of Feeder Heifers not well compared. Very Good Demand for Several Long Strings, and Many Load Lots and Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Strong, Active Market. The vast majority of the Offering was Spring born calves carrying Light to Moderate Flesh and had both Spring and Fall vaccinations. Much of the Offering were clean open haired cattle with a very attractive presentation. The next Feeder Cattle Sale is November 5th, expecting 5,500 Spring Calves. Remember to Vote on Election Day!
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
