Compared to last week Feeder Steers 450 to 500 Steady, 550 to 650 10.00 to 12.00 higher, 650 to 700 Steady, 700 to 750 3.00 higher, Feeder Heifers 400 to 450 Steady, 450 to 500 8.00 higher, 500 to 550 3.00 higher, 550 to 600 Steady, 600 to 650 4.00 lower. Very Good Demand for Several Load Lots and many Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on an Active Market. The Supply consisted of both Weaned and Un-weaned Spring born Calves, most of which had Spring and Fall Vaccinations, and carried Light to Moderate Flesh. There was certainly some fill as noted on some of the Offerings but overall were clean, attractive, open haired cattle. The Next Feeder Cattle Sale is December 19.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
