Compared to last week Feeder Steers 400 to 550 Steady, 550 to 600 Steady to 2.00 lower, 600 to 850 Steady to 2.00 higher, Feeder Heifers 400 to 450 Steady, 450 to 750 2.00 to 4.00 lower, 750 to 950 Steady to 2.00 higher. Very Good Demand for Many Long, Long Strings, Load Lots and Many Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on an Active Market. Several instances of multiple loads of the same sort of cattle off the same ranch allowed buyers to buy in volume. Most of the Supply was Home Raised, fully vaccinated, and carried light to moderate flesh with favorable weighing conditions. The next Feeder Cattle Sale is October 20, Expecting 8,000 Head.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
