Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 4.00 lower with the exception of 9 weight steers which sold 8.00 higher. Steer calves were steady to 6.00 lower while heifer calves were 4.00-8.00 lower. Demand was good on a moderate supply. There were seven loads of 8 and 9 weight steers in the offering with the remaining balance mostly unweaned or short-weaned calves. The largest draft of the day was 123 head of steers weighing 950 lbs. which sold for 339.00/cwt. The USDA's Cattle on Feed Report, released Friday, reported Inventories were one percent lower, Placements were seven percent lower and Marketings were six percent lower than a year ago. The CME Cattle Futures traded lower, on Tuesday, while the Grain Futures traded higher.

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
