***Close*** Compared to last week, feeder steers were steady to 6.00 higher with feeder heifers not well tested. Steer and heifer calves were uneven from 3.00 lower to 6.00 higher. Demand was good on a moderate supply. The quality of the offering was above average especially on several loads of yearlings. The largest drafts of the day was 72 head of 624 lb. heifers which sold for 404.00/cwt. and 72 head of 772 lb. steers which sold for 382.00/cwt. The 5 Area Fed Cattle Prices set a new record high this week at 248.35/cwt. Most all salebarns are reporting record or near record highs for various weights with ORS being no exception.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
