Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to last week, steer calves under 600 lbs. sold 8.00-12.00 higher with heavier weight steers selling steady to 5.00 higher. Heifer calves under 650 lbs sold 3.00-6.00 higher with spots 12.00 higher. Heavier weights heifers were not well tested. Demand was good on a moderate supply. The largest draft of the day was 44 head of 745 lb. steers that brought 270.00/cwt. Another stick-out draft was 28 head of 839 lb. steers that brought 250.00/cwt. The first significant Spring rain fell across the area this past weekend with reports of 2-7 inches, helping to relieve some drought conditions.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
