Market comments — USDA reporter

***Close*** Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold 5.00-10.00 higher with spots 15.00 higher on calves. Demand was very good on a moderate supply. The market was active with the quality of the offering above average. For the first time in several weeks 50 percent or more of the offering weighed over 600 lbs. One stick-out draft of the day was 49 head of 500 lb. steers that brought 360.00/cwt. The USDA's Cattle on Feed Report, released Friday, reported Inventories were 1 percent higher, Placements 12 percent lower and Marketings 14 percent lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
