Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last report 12/22/23: Feeder steers 5.00-7.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 lower. Demand moderate for feeder cattle as cattle futures underwhelmed thru the holidays. Steer calves under 500 lbs steady to 4.00 higher; over 500 lbs 5.00-7.00 lower. Heifer calves under 500 lbs 2.00-4.00 higher; over 500 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Demand remains good for lighter weight cattle suitable for winter pastures. Moisture fell over the holidays giving a good boost to those pastures. Sharp cold front is headed this way and many worry how the negative temperatures will affect wheat pastures. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower, except Lean cows and they sold up to 5.00 higher. Slaughter bulls mostly steady. Demand moderate to good for slaughter cows, but still very good for replacements. Numbers at state reported sale barns expected very light for next week as negative wind chills and possible snow will make travel difficult.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
