Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: This week: 3,313 cows and bulls sold with 76 percent going to packers; Last week: 3,556 head sold with 76 percent going to packers; Last Year: 3,500 head sold with 62 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Feeder steers mostly steady to 1.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Demand moderate to good for feeder cattle and improved following several days of upward movement in the cattle futures. Steer calves steady to 2.00 lower. Heifer calves 2.00-6.00 higher. Demand moderate for calves, with longer weaned calves seeing the best demand. Slaughter cows 1.00-3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 3.00 lower. Cow numbers continue relatively large. Much of the state still pretty warm and dry, and this is encouraging producers to market cows.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
