Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: This week: 3,556 cows and bulls sold with 76 percent going to packers; Last week: 2,999 head sold with 73 percent going to packers; Last Year: 3,171 head sold with 66 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 lower, except 800-900 lbs 1.00-3.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves sold 1.00-3.00 lower. Demand moderate for feeder cattle prices as grain prices rose. Demand for calves moderate with short weaned or un-weaned calves showing the least demand. Weather was hot and dry the last part of September, however late week storms has brought cooler temps and some much needed rain. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 1.00 lower. Cow numbers continue large at auction barns with 3/4 of the head counts headed to the packer. September's lack of rain has cow culling taking place somewhat early.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
