Market comments — USDA reporter

Special Note: For NASS: This week: 2,210 cows and bulls sold with 59 percent going to packers; Last Week: 1,645 head sold with 60 percent going to packers; Last Year: 1,221 head sold with 57 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Combined weighted average for 7 auctions: Ada, Apache, McAlester, OKC, OKC West, Tulsa, and Woodward. Feeder steers sold steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Steer calves sold steady to 4.00 higher and heifer calves steady to 4.00 higher, with instances of 10.00-12.00 higher. Demand good. Spring like weather was present across the trade region this week, but a cold front is expected to move in next week bringing evening temperatures into the teens. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-7.00 higher. Slaughter bulls steady to 3.00 higher. Packer demand good to very good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
