Market comments — USDA reporter

For NASS: This week: 1,645 cows and bulls sold with 60 percent going to packers; Last Week: 2,537 head sold with 61 percent going to packers; Last Year: 2,146 head sold with 72 percent going to packers. Compared to last week: Combined weighted average for 7 auctions: Ada, Apache, McAlester, OKC, OKC West, Tulsa, and Woodward. Feeder steers sold mostly steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher. Steer calves sold steady to 3.00 higher and heifer calves steady to 4.00 higher. Demand moderate to good. Many parts of the state can expect to receive rain or thunderstorms this weekend and continued into next week. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to 6.00 higher, with instances of 7.00-10.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 2.00 higher. Packer demand good to very good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?
