Compared to last week steers less than 600 lbs sold 8.00 to 10.00 higher, 600 to 800 lbs sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher, and over 800 lbs sold 4.00 to 8.00 higher. Heifers less than 600 lbs sold 7.00 to 10.00 higher, and over 600 lbs sold unevenly steady on heifers going to the feedlots. Heifers sold by the head going back as replacements sold 300.00 per head more. Demand was good to very good. Quite a few heifers going back to the breeding pastures this summer. A lot of ranchers have sold their heifer crop the last couple of years and are needing to replace old cows on the ranch. Per say, expansion may not be happening as drought conditions are knocking on the door and ranchers are swapping old genetics for younger genetics in their herds. Feedlots held firm on asking prices and sold at higher money on the week on a Friday trade. Live sales sold 5.00 higher from 245.00 to 246.00 and dressed sales sold 4.00 higher at mostly 382.00

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
