Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, 4 weight steers sold 3.00 lower, 500 to 800 lbs sold steady to 6.00 higher. Heifers less than 500 lbs sold 10.00 higher, over 500 lbs sold unevenly steady. Not enough feeders last week for a good market comparison. Demand was good for calves, feeders. With good to very good demand for bred heifers and cows. Commercial bred cows hitting new records at area auctions. Several long-time ranchers are having complete or partial dispersions. Some may be retiring; others could be thinking it's very dry let's sell when the price is really good or both scenarios and many one might not think about. Feedlot sales saw another increase on cash sales with live trades from 193.00-196.00, 3.00 to 4.00 higher than previous week and dressed bulk of the dressed sales at 305.00, 8.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
