Compared to last week, steers less than 700 lbs sold sharply higher, over 700 lbs sold steady to 10.00 higher. Heifers less than 600 lbs sold sharply higher, over 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Demand was good to very good for this week's short run. Quite a few local, out of state and internet buyers at the auctions. Demand was also good for the short supply of bred cows and heifers that hit the market. Yearling operations continue to back fill empty lots with light weight calves. With recent rains some buyer from the Southern Plains filled the seats and sent calves that way for winter grazing. Feedlots received a Thanksgiving gift with a higher market as live sales sold 3.00 to 4.00 higher from 190.00 to 192.00 and dressed sales sold 5.00 higher at 295.00. Some of the live sales are heading south for slaughter. Note, bulk of the calves less than 600 lbs are not weaned.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
